Belle Velvet is one of the UK’s youngest rising stars. At just fourteen, she has a big voice and big dreams. This week sees the release of her next single, One Hundred And Ten, which will be available to stream and download on all major platforms.
There are a lot of things that I really do like about One Hundred And Ten. The title line in the chorus is smart and sassy, the kind of attitude I wish I’d had in my early teens. It has the attitude of a more mature debut-era Taylor Swift but lacks some of the lyrical finesse. It’s also fairly one-note in terms of emotional impact. Singing about boyfriends is kind of the standard – it would be pretty weird to hear a fourteen-year-old singing about whiskey and loss. But when it comes down to it, it’s quite obvious that this song was written by a young girl. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing – remember, Belle is fourteen years old. She has a lot of talent, but she has of growing left to do.
Of the song, Belle explains: It’s about people judging me on what they’ve heard about me before they even know me. The tune itself is catchy, and Belle has a fantastic voice. I can see it growing with her as she matures – she’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
