Birmingham-based artist Charlotte Young is topping off a fantastic year with the release of Praying For Rain. Back in April, Young rocketed to #1 with both her debut single Whiplash and EP Blown Away. Since then, she’s made a name for herself in the community by performing countless virtual shows and collaborating with Bob Fitzgerald on Taking My Heart Away.
Praying For Rain is a powerful country ballad in the same vein as Whiplash. The potential for singalong is fantastic, and the song itself is even better. I could wax lyrical for hours. I’ve been lucky enough to hear this song in its demo stage and as an acoustic solo performance. It just gets better each time. Young’s voice is warm and rich, more powerful and versatile in this track than in the entirety of her first EP. The delicate verses build to gut-wrenching emotion in the chorus and bridge, all underpinned by classic steel guitar and layered harmonies. Young wrote the song inspired by a TV show. She explains: ’I wanted to write something from the perspective of one of the characters… I know how upsetting it can be during a breakup and rewrote the verses into a story.’ The song is a true showstopper and a real lighters-in-the-air moment for an artist who has already exhibited an impressive amount of growth in such a short time.
