Christmas has an international twist this year as Gary Quinn and Sophie Hanson join forces to release their poignant version of the Christmas classic O Holy Night. Quinn – a Northern Irish 6-time British CMA award winner, and Hanson – a Swedish country-pop artist – bonded over a shared love for the traditional carol.
“This is the first time I’ve released a Christmas song and I’m really excited that I get to do so with Gary,” explains Hanson. Quinn adds: “I’ve always loved ‘O Holy Night’, it reminds me of family and how special it is to be with one another at Christmas time.”
O Holy Night has always been one of my favourite traditional holiday songs. There’s something about it – the way it can sound so full of hope in spite of the downbeat melody – that tugs at my heartstrings. This rendition is no different. Quinn’s and Hanson’s voices blend beautifully – Quinn has a rich, deep timbre and Hanson’s is crystal clear and angelic. Combined, their harmonies absolutely soar. The simple electric guitar stabs are subtle but effective and paired with cello, brings a little hint of country to this festive classic.
