Self-styled “country-punk” rebel Manny Blu has sent shockwaves through country music, spanning from his hometown in Montreal all the way to Nashville. His 2020 debut EP, New Ink, features the single Old Money, whilst his 2021 single Train has recently reached 1m streams. Blu releases his new single, Valet, on July 9th.
Valet features the harmonies of former The Voice contestant Brittany Kennel. It’s a much-anticipated change of pace for Blu and showcases the astonishing versatility in his voice, as well as the previously undiscovered tenderness. The ballad is an ode not only to a great love, but to the city of Nashville itself. Co-written by Nashville songwriting superstar Ryan Hurd, the song has a contemporary pop-country sound, anchored by clean guitars and simple percussion which drive a mid-tempo melody. Kennel’s light harmonies lift the track with subtle elegance, whilst Blu’s usually rough and powerful voice is understated and perfectly tempered in its performance here. It’s not one for the country purists, but if you’re happy to roll with a few outside influences, you – and the radio – will fall in love with this song.
