Manchester-based songwriting duo O’Neill & Jones consists of Mat – a preacher’s son – and Sophie, an architect’s daughter. Their sweeping soundscapes are built from melodic guitar, luscious harmonies and poetic lyrics with songs exploring big themes in small scenes. Their second single, Broken Shoes, is released on April 2nd 2021.
Broken Shoes is both melancholic and hopeful, a dreamy folk-country fairytale that is somehow reminiscent of both The Weepies and The Civil Wars. The percussion is bright, the strings rousing and the guitar uplifting; the harmonies are mesmerising. It’s a perfect springtime song with a light and refreshing sound for a season of growth and rebirth – you could imagine a river walk or a cup of coffee with the quiet, early morning sun. It’s already one of my favourite releases of the year.
