Stuart Rolfe has always found himself drawn to the music industry. His motivation and hard work paid off in 2016 where he successfully auditioned for Country2Country and worked as a session musician for Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, and the Pistol Annies, to name a few. Not long afterwards, he met Gareth Nugent whilst working as a session guitarist for BMLG and Sony Nashville UK. Nugent gave Rolfet the encouragement to stand up and be noticed which led to the recording of his EP during 2020’s lockdown.
“Music is my passion, my past, present and future,” Rolfe asserts. “No matter how many mountains we must climb, always remember the good times.”
Taking to the front of the stage after 20 years of hiding in the shadows was frightening until he met Becky Lawrence. The encouragement gained from her knowledge and love of music has given Stuart the tools to strive forward. Working as Rolfe’s vocal coach, Lawrence suggested the pair collaborate on a project. Rolfe suggested I Need You, and the rest is history.
Written by David Lee and Tony Lane and made famous by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, the double Grammy award-nominated ballad tells the story of two lovers expressing what their relationship means.
“For us personally, it represents how people need each other, not necessarily in a romantic sense,” Rolfe and Lawrence explain. “After what we’ve all been through the past year or so, spending time with those you love has never felt more important.”
This cover remains faithful to the original, but with a new, slightly less intimate twist. Rolfe delivers a heartfelt performance, clearly moved and motivated by his friendship with Lawrence. And speaking of Becky Lawrence – in spite of an emotionally tumultuous year, she has never sounded better. The production of the track brings it up to date, with rich instrumentation and layered harmonies – but beneath the bells, whistles and gift bows, the song’s heart remains.
The duet was recorded and produced at NAM Studios, Trowbridge by multi-instrumentalist and producer Tyler Spicer. Grammy award-winning drummer Rob Brian and guitarist Dylan Smith also feature.
